From headstone to ancestry.com, graveyard-mound to highway shrine, the memorials we build across time, space, and form, paint a picture of not only how we grieve the Dead, but how we choose to remember and honor the Dead —and those who reside on the other side of the veil. For someone who navigates between these two worlds, death memorials hold a particularly important key. They are an invitation to ask ourselves how we, and others, have chosen to honor the past and how we will continue to work with the dead beyond the grave. Part archeological survey, and part ancestor veneration, Gravestones, Graveyards, & Remembrance Sites, is a community workshop that is just as much an exploration of the iconography and visual culture of traditional death memorials, as it is an exploration of your answer to the question, “how do I commemorate them?” Steven Velazquez (He/They) is a community archivist, folk witch, and practicing psychic medium, who is committed to translating the stories of our pasts, to help us in actualizing more empathetic futures.
