Service Description

So many astrology books and memes are full of gendered, heteronormative stereotypes. Even if your astrology education missed the gender-specific interpretations of Linda Goodman’s Love Signs, our cultures have strong associations of certain planets, signs, and related behaviors with either men or women (no other genders exist for this way of thinking). Examples include the pop psychology bestseller "Men Are From Mars, Women are From Venus", religious and spiritual imagery of women and the moon, and the “alpha male” traits that could be almost identical to the “positive” traits of a Leo sun. Things can get sticky when we apply cultural stories like these to our study of astrology, especially when you or the person whose chart you are reading is queer, nonbinary, or otherwise gender-nonconforming. This all-levels workshop will help you notice, unpack, and rethink assumptions about strongly “gendered” planets (sun, moon, Venus, Mars, and Saturn) and signs. Through lively discussion, demonstration, lecture, and reflective exercises, we will explore how astrology can move around, between, and “do drag” with those gender stereotypes. You’ll take away a planet and sign a “cheat sheet” with examples of gender-role-subverting planet interpretations and your own fresh interpretations of how these symbols show up in yourself and the people you know.
